În această lună, în ziua a treia, pomenirea Sfântului Sfinţitului Mucenic Antim, episcopul Nicomidiei.
Sfăntul Antim era episcop al oraşului Nicomidia (în Bitinia - Asia Mică) atunci când, din porunca împăratului Diocleţian (284-305), la anul 288, s-a dat foc bisericii din Nicomidia, murind pentru Hristos douăzeci de mii de creştini (mucenici prăznuiţi în 28 decembrie). El s-a aflat în fruntea credincioşilor săi în această încercare şi i-a încurajat a-şi pună în Dumnezeu toată încrederea şi nădejdea. Atunci, prin harul şi providenţa lui Dumnezeu, sfântul Antim şi alţi câţiva creştini, au scapat de moarte şi s-au ascuns în munţii din împrejurimi.
Dar după câţiva ani ei au fost prinşi şi sfântul episcop a fost adus legat înaintea lui Maximian (305-311), unde se aflau de faţă toate uneltele cele pentru chinuire. Şi, de vreme ce-l întrebară, a mărturisit cu îndrăzneala şi nesilit de nimeni pe Hristos. Pentru aceea întâi i-au zdrobit coastele, apoi l-au rănit cu fier încins; l-au întins gol deasupra unor hârburi şi l-au bătut cu toiege; l-au încălţat cu încălţăminte de aramă arsă în foc, şi apoi i-au tăiat capul. Dar, minunea lui Dumnezeu, şi după moartea sfântului părul a continuat să-i crească pe capul tăiat.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea sfintei Febe, diaconiţa la Cenchreae lângă Corint.
Această sfântă a fost diaconiţă a Bisericii şi următoare sfântului apostol Pavel, care o pomeneşte în epistola către Romani 16, 1-2.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Cuviosului Părintelui nostru Teoctist, împreună-ajunător cu marele Eftimie.
Sfântul Teoctist al Palestinei a fost un mare ascet care a trăit în sălbăticia iudeică numită Wadi Mukellik. La început a fost împreună-nevoitor cu Sfântului Eftimie cel Mare (praznuit la 20 ianuarie). Dragostea unuia faţă de celălalt a crescut într-atât încât păreau că sunt două trupuri cu un singur suflet. Cei doi se asemănau foarte mult în virtuţi şi sfinţenie, sprijinindu-se reciproc în nevoinţe. În fiecare an după Bobotează se retrăgeau în deşert pentru a se ruga în pustietate şi se întorceau la chiliile lor în Duminica Floriilor.
După cinci ani petrecuţi împreună, Sfinţii Eftimie şi Teoctist s-au retras în deşert pe durata Postului Mare, descoperind în wadi (=oază) o peşteră mare care a devenit mai târziu biserică. Ei au decis să rămână acolo, fiind convinşi că aceea era voia Domnului. Petrecând izolaţi de lume, trăiau mâncând ierburi sălbatice.
Însă Dumnezeu nu dorea ca aceste candele luminoase să rămână necunoscute. EL dorea ca şi ceilalţi să se bucure de înţelepciunea şi sfinţenia lor. Astfel, într-o zi nişte păstori din Betania i-au descoperit pe cei doi şi au alergat de au spus şi altora din sat despre ei. Nu peste mult timp, ei au fost vizitaţi de mulţi oameni ba chiar şi de călugări care veneau din alte mănăstiri şi doreau să rămână sub ascultarea lor.
Adunându-se mulţi călugări, sfinţii au fost nevoiţi să ridice o lavră deasupra bisericii din peşteră. Teoctist a devenit egumenul lavrei iar Sf. Eftimie a continuat să trăiască în singurătate, în peşteră. Înţeleptul Teoctist a primit pe toţi cei care veneau la el, spovedindu-i şi vindecându-le neputinţele sufleteşti şi trupeşti cu medicamentul spiritual potrivit fiecăruia.
La o vârstă foarte înaintată, sfântul s-a îmbolnăvit şi Eftimie a fost cel care, deşi împlinise şi el vârsta de 90 de ani, l-a vizitat şi l-a îngrijit. Când Sf. Teoctist s-a mutat la Domnul în anul 467, la înmormântarea sa a slujit Patriarhul Anastasie al Ierusalimului.
Sf. Teoctist al Palestinei este altul decât Sf. Teoctist al Siciliei (prăznuit în 4 ianuarie).
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfântului Zinon, care s-a săvârşit, fiind lovit cu pietre şi decapitat.
Sf. Zinon a suferit împreună cu mucenicul Antim episcopul în vremea împăraţilor Diocleţian (284-305) şi Maximian (305-311), care îi persecutau pe creştini. După un incendiu la curtea imperială din Nicomidia, persecuţia creştinilor s-a înteţit, aceştia fiind acuzaţi că au pus foc cu deadinsul. Numai în Nicomiodia de Ziua Naşterii Domnului au fost arşi de vii într-o biserică 20.000 de creştini. Această monstruoasă inumanitate nu i-a speriat pe creştini, care au continuat să-şi mărturisească credinţa cu tărie, îndurând mucenicie pentru Hristos.
Câţiva ani mai târziu, soldatul Zinon l-a denunţat pe împăratul Maximian pentru persecuţiile nedrepte ale creştinilor, drept care a fost lovit cu pietre şi decapitat.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfintei Vasilisa din Nicomidia.
Fiind domnitor în Nicomidia Alexandru, care prigonea pe crestini, a fost adusă înaintea lui şi sfânta.
Domnitorul, văzând neînduplecarea ei, a poruncit să o bată peste obraz, iar ea mulţumea lui Dumnezeu; atunci a poruncit să o dezbrace de îmbrăcăminte şi să o bata cu toiege. Iar ea mai mult mulţumea lui Dumnezeu. Şi atâta au bătut-o peste tot trupul, încât era o rană peste tot. Apoi a fost supusă la nenumarate chinuri, dar ea striga: "Multumescu-Ţi Doamne, Dumnezeul meu". Văzând domnitorul că ea socoteşte chinurile ca nişte jucarii, a poruncit să fie încins un cuptor şi să fie aruncată în el. Sfânta şi-a facut semnul crucii şi a intrat în mijlocul văpăii şi stând multe ceasuri, a fost păzită nevătămată, aşa cum a rămas nevătămată şi din alte chinuri. Acestea toate văzându-le domnitorul se minuna şi, umilindu-se cu sufletul în ce chip sunt judecăţile lui Dumnezeu, a căzut la picioarele sfintei zicând: "Miluieşte-mă roaba lui Dumnezeu, cerescul împărat, şi mă iartă de câte rele am arătat faţă de tine, şi mă fă şi pe mine ostaş împăratului tău, de vreme ce, precum zici, primeşte şi pe cei păcătoşi".
Atunci sfânta, mulţumind Atotputernicului Dumnezeu, învăţă pe domnitor şi ducându-l în biserică la Antonie episcopul, l-a botezat. După ce a fost botezat, domnitorul a zis către sfânta: "Roaba lui Dumnezeu, roagă-te pentru mine să fiu iertat pentru cele ce ţi-am făcut ţie, şi să săvârşesc cu bună săvârşire vremea vieţii mele". Sfânta făcând ruga, iar Alexandru dând mărire şi mulţumită lui Dumnezeu, numaidecât şi-a dat sufletul către Domnul. Sfânta, îngropându-i trupul, a ieşit împreună cu episcopul din cetate afară ca la trei mile şi, aflând o piatră, a stat pe ea si, rugându-se, a izvorât apa şi a băut şi a mulţumit lui Dumnezeu; şi mergând încă puţin zise: "Doamne, primeşte duhul meu cu pace". Acestea zicând şi, îngenunchind la pământ, s-a dus către Domnul cu bucurie, veselindu-se şi mulţumind lui Dumnezeu. Deci episcopul Antonie a a îngropat-o, făcându-i mormântul lângă piatra din care izvorâse apa la rugăciunea sfintei.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfântului Aristion, episcopul Alexandriei din Cilicia, care prin foc s-a săvârşit.
Sf. Aristion a fost episcopul Alexandriei Inferioare, în Cilicia (Asia Mică). Acesta s-a născut în orăşelul Aribazo, eparhia Apamea din Siria, la începutul celui de-al doilea secol, din părinţi păgâni, trăindu-şi primii ani de viaţă în idolatrie.
Nu ştim ce educaţie primară a primit Sf. Aristion sau unde a studiat mai departe, dar ştim că nimic nu i-a satisfăcut căutarea pentru adevăr. Mucenicul Antonie, pe atunci un băieţel de zece ani, i-a arătat calea spre adevăr, învăţându-l adevărata credinţă astfel încât Aristion a crescut duhovniceşte.
Riscându-şi viaţa, într-o perioadă în care persecuţia era în floare, Antonie nu era doar un simplu membru al bisericii locale ci un propovăduitor al credinţei lui Hristos. Lucrarea sa pentru Aristion a fost binecuvântată pentru că şi acesta se ruga pentru tânărul său prieten, amintindu-şi de strădania şi curajul acestuia de a înfrunta pericolul pentru credinţa adevărată. Nu numai că Antonie a devenit mucenic al lui Hristos la vârsta de 20 de ani dar a mai călăuzit un suflet pe calea mântuirii, pe Sf. Aristion.
Câţiva ani mai târziu, Sf. Aristion a fost sfinţit episcop de Isso în Cilicia, fiind un bun păstor pentru turma sa.
Într-o zi, conducătorul Alexandriei l-a arestat pe Aristion pe motiv că era creştin. Fiind supus unui proces public, sfântul episcop nu s-a pierdut cu firea. Pacea sa l-a făcut pe egumenul roman să înţeleagă că nu-i va fi uşor să trateze cu acest om. La început a vrut să-l depărteze de Hristos prin vorbe măgulitoare şi promisiuni. Văzând că nu au nici un efect, acesta a trecut la ameninţări cu tortura. Dar Sf. Aristion stătea în faţa egumenului şi a consilierilor săi rugându-se cu milă şi cu dragoste pentru sufletele lor. Chiar şi întemniţat, prizonierul era mai puternic decât captivii săi, refuzând închinarea la idoli.
Înaintea unei mulţimi de idolatri, sfântul a vorbit despre Dumnezeu şi Sfânta Treime, prin care toate s-au făcut, despre întruparea ca om a Mântuitorului Hristos din dorinţa lui Dumnezeu de a ne salva sufletele, despre cum Hristos aduce salvarea omului păcătos, dându-i şansa de a se mântui.
"Ce goale sunt aceste statui fără de suflet şi ce neajutorat pare eparhul vostru în hainele lui scumpe!, spuse episcopul."
Cei care l-au auzit vorbind pe sfânt au fost impresionaţi de curajul său. Aristion i-a invitat să creadă în adevărul pe care el îl descoperea lor. Oamenii au înţeles că acela era un om deosebit, un sfânt şi au dorit să asculte cuvântul său.
Eparhul roman n-a putut să-l îngenuncheze pe Aristion decât prin violenţă, condamnându-l la moarte. El a ordonat soldaţilor săi să aprindă un cuptor mare şi să-l arunce pe sfânt în flăcări. Sfântul a rămas curajos până la sfârşit. Puţinii creştini prezenţi la execuţie s-au abţinut să nu plângă. Ei se rugau în şoaptă pentru sfânt, fiind foarte trişti că părintele lor îi părăsea. Ei ştiau totuşi că păstorul lor sufletesc nu va înceta să se roage pentru ei, mai ales acum că se duce la Hristos. Până la ultima suflare sfântul a înălţat imnuri de laudă lui Dumnezeu.
Eparhul nu ştia ce greşeală mare săvârşeşte. El n-a înţeles că moartea nu înseamnă sfârşitul nici pentru om nici pentru adevăr. Nimic nu-l putea despărţi pe Sf. Aristion de Fântâna Vieţii, Domnul pregătindu-i cununa izbăvirii.
După stingerea focului, fiii duhovniceşti ai sfântului au luat din cuptor cât de multe oase au putut şi cu evlavie au îngropat sfintele moaşte într-un loc străin, nedescoperit nici până în zilele noastre.
În anul 2003, în Grecia John G. Thalassinos a publicat o biografie mai amănunţită a sfântului, sub titlul: SFÂNTUL SFINŢIT MUCENIC ARISTION (Atena, 2003), care conţine slujba şi acatistul sfântului întocmite de Ieromonahul imnograf Atanasie de la Mănăstirea Simonos-Petras din Muntele Athos.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfântului Hariton, care fiind aruncat în groapa de var, s-a săvârşit.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sf. Mucenic Arhontiul, care cu foamea fiind chinuit, s-a săvârşit.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea celui întru sfinţi împăratul Constantin cel Nou (cel Tânăr), care se săvârşeşte în Biserica Sfinţilor Apostoli din Constantinopol.
Tot în această zi, pomenirea Sfântului noului Mucenic Polidor, care a mărturisit în Efesul cel nou la anul 1794 şi prin sugrumare s-a savârşit.
Cu ale lor sfinte rugăciuni, Doamne, miluieşte-ne şi ne mântuieşte pe noi. Amin.

- Saint Hereswith, a princess from Northumbria in England, and sister of St Hilda, she ended her life as a nun at Chelles Abbey in France (c. 690)<ref name=LATIN/><ref group="note">"ST. HERESWITHA was daughter of Ereric, the nephew of St. Edwin, King of Northumbria, and sister of St. Hilda of Whitby. She was married to St. Ethelhere, who succeeded his brother Anna as King of the East Angles, but reigned only one year, being killed in the wars with Oswy in 655. Having thus become a widow, Hereswitha resolved to embrace the religious life, and for this purpose went to Chelles, at that time in the diocese of Paris. There she was professed, and faithfully persevered in her holy state until death. It was the intention of St. Hilda to have joined her sister, but before she would leave England she was recalled by St. Aidan to establish a monastery of Virgins in Northumbria. (Thomas of Ely says that Hereswitha was the wife of Anna, but there are difficulties which seem to make it impossible.
